What's the Season?

For some reason I'm having a really hard time getting into the holiday spirit this year.

"It's December! It's Christmas! Fun! Food! Parties!" they say.

"Meh." I say.

****

So I asked myself, "What's the best way to elevate my mood?"

"Alcohol?" My Cerebral Cortex and Limbic System guessed in harmony, as my liver groaned.

"Ooo! Ooo! I know this one! Chocolate!" chimed in the tongue.

"Shut up, all of you. The answer is music - Jeez, where have you been for the last four decades? Don't you know her at all?" snarked my tough, little heart.

Onto iTunes I went last night, buying a sleigh-load of holiday music. When I looked back at the songs I'd selected, I realized they were all modern covers of Christmas classics.

WHO, I ask you, doesn't love Springsteen's version of Santa Claus is Comin' to Town?
Ah, that Clarence and his new saxophone get me every time.

So here's the deal: Let's us - you and me - put together an All Time Greatest Xmas Covers playlist. Submit your suggestion in the comment section below, and I'll tabulate, find links and post the results over the weekend.

Ho, baby - Ho, baby - Ho!

I'm going to have to think of one but I will say I hope you don't add "MIDNIGHT AT THE OASIS" it was on EVERY damn Christmas CD list when I worked retail.. and if I have to hear that woman sing about "Sing your camel to bed" I'm going to vomit!

I will think of something and add to this list soon!

Not typically a fan, but I do love Barbra Streisand's version of "Favorite Things".

"Santa Baby" by Eartha Kitt. Meeeooowwww! "You're a mean one Mr. Grinch" by Thurl Ravenscroft not Boris Karloff (I did not know that!)"Blue Christmas" by ELVIS or anything by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin.

Boris Karloff?

Boris Karloff sang the original Mr. Grinch. The Brian Setzer Orchestra version is very cool. And the Frank Zappa version is awesome.

CG3 - Earth Kitt did the original version of Santa Baby, no? The Madonna version sucks mistletoe. The Miss Piggy version is pretty damn funny. And if you like punk, which I do, the Dollyrots version ROCKS.

You've already guessed the best cover....Bruce Springsteen's Santa Claus! But one of my favorite originals and my wife's all-time BLAAHH is Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmas Time. Everybody has to have one cheesy song, right?

Oh Come Emmanuel by Neil Diamond.

Please don't tell anyone I suggessted this...
Happy Holidays by Andy Williams, actually the whole "album" was great when I was growing up. I agree with any of Bing Crosby's especially White Christmas.
Wizards of Winter by Transiberian Orchestra.
I love Christmas music and have been listening to it since Nov 5th when Birmingham station 96.5 started playing it non-stop. Still am not in the spirit either!
Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree by I have no idea. The song reminds me of childhood. My next favorite is Winter Wonderland. As a kid, I used to sing it to myself while ice skating (uh, I might have been a bit weird).

BTW - The whole, "brain, tongue, heart" conversation was totally ripped off from Fabs.

You need to read his version - it's too funny!

Bless you for the credit! Am I too late to recommend something. "I Believe In Father Christmas" by Greg Lake is excellent (and it is kind of a cover version, if you're a fan of Prokofiev).

I love the Hawaiian Christmas Song, All I Want For Christmas (by Mariah), and Springsteen's Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.
